Aloe vera is well-known for its skin-healing properties. It is used in almost every household to manage burns, skin infections, moisturise skin and hair. It can even be added to smoothies as an immune-boosting agent.

“Aloe vera can be extremely beneficial for dry skin. Also, when applied directly on the skin and dry patches it can provide an instant burst of hydration,” says Ahana Nambiar, ayurveda expert, Bengaluru.

Ayurvedic understanding- Aloe vera

Besides its role in the cosmetic industry, aloe vera stands out as the most extensively cultivated herbal succulent, for medicinal purposes. Aloe vera juice is a tonic for the female reproductive system. “The herb is rejuvenating and purgative. It balances the three bodily doshas (energies),” says Nambiar. Ayurveda physicians call it kumari which means young girl. It is because the herb is believed to balance the feminine energy and positively affect female reproductive organs.

Aloe vera can be used internally as well as externally—as topical application for skin health and in the form of aloe vera juice for internal consumption.

Ayurveda experts recommend home remedies with aloe vera to manage constipation, colic issues, skin conditions, jaundice, infections, and worm infestations. Experts caution against ingesting aloe gels designed for external use. To extract natural aloe vera gel, remove a mature leaf from the plant, then cut it lengthwise, and squeeze the gel out. Store the gel in a glass container in the freezer.

Rich in nutrients

The presence of lignin content in aloe vera contributes to its anti-ageing properties. Also, Studies indicate that aloe vera possesses antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory qualities. As aloe vera is rich in nutrient composition, try adding it to your regular diet in smoothies, fruit juice or food. This helps to build a healthy immune system.

Researchers have identified up to 75 potentially active constituents in aloe vera. Moreover, the herb is rich in vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids, and amino acids. The vitamins A (beta-carotene), C, and E, along with B12, folic acid, and choline, serve as antioxidants. Furthermore, aloe vera contains a rich amount of calcium, chromium, selenium, magnesium, manganese, potassium, sodium, and zinc.

Little caution

“If you have allergies to plants belonging to the Liliaceae family, such as garlic, onions, or tulips, there is a possibility that you might also be allergic to aloe vera,” warns Dr Nambiar. In such cases, it is advisable to avoid the topical or oral use of aloe vera. Additionally, experts do not recommend the consumption of this herb during pregnancy, and breastfeeding.
