The 6 things you must know about the HPV vaccine

HPV vaccine: Why you should get your children vaccinated

In her recent interim budget speech, Indian union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that girls aged 9-14 years will be encouraged to get vaccinated against cervical cancer. Here are six important facts about the HPV jab. 

The first and perhaps the most important fact is that taking the vaccine after pre-cancerous lesions have already developed will not help. You must remember that the HPV vaccine is prophylactic. Moreover, one responds better to the vaccine when they are young.

While the ideal age for girls to get the HPV vaccine jab is 9-14 years — before they become sexually active — as per the latest recommendations, those up to the age of 45 years can get the jab, provided the pre-cancerous lesions have not developed yet. If taken before the age of 14 years, it is a two-dose vaccine; if one takes it after the age of 14 years, they will require a three-dose vaccine.
