Approaches to manage Down Syndrome

People with Down syndrome experience many physical, emotional and mental health challenges. This article explores some of the common management strategies for each of the challenges

At the recent 2023 Academy Awards, one person – James Martin – toppled common misconceptions about people with Down syndrome. The 31-year old, Irish actor, born with Down syndrome, won two Oscars for his role as Lorcan in the film An Irish Goodbye. 

James also plays the harmonica and mouth organ.

His achievements are a testament to the potential of those with Down syndrome and a powerful reminder that courage and determination can lead to great success.

By deepening our understanding of Down syndrome, we can avoid inadvertently limiting the potential of those with the condition and instead empower them to lead fulfilling lives.  Embracing our differences and celebrating diversity can help us to cultivate an environment of acceptance and inclusion for people with Down syndrome.

Chris Burke, another actor with Down syndrome puts it succinctly: “It is not our disabilities, but our abilities that count.”

Owing to the inherent genetic aberrations at birth, people with Down syndrome have a higher risk of developing several physical, emotional and mental health challenges. A few approaches listed below can help improve their quality of life. 

Challenges - approaches that help Respiratory infections, defects, hearing vision problems and congenital heart - Effective treatments are available to minimise and ease symptoms of recurrent infections. Early interventions are key in tackling congenital conditions Low muscle density and weakness - A healthy diet; physiotherapy, exercises and balance training to build muscle tone; games-based activities like playing with clay, sand, and wet sponge for fine motor skills Delayed speech and language skills- Speech therapy, engaging in talking, encouraging singing, and learning sign language Communication challenges due to slow learning and lag in processing information - Recognising learning patterns and difficulties; teaching with visuals; regular reading to build vocabulary and language Behavioural challenges such as impulsivity, anxiety, depression, and stubbornness - Identifying the underlying difficulties in expressing themselves; encouraging them to stay socially connected; Consistent support from family
