Embracing differences: celebrating Down syndrome

Every year, 21 March is celebrated as World Down Syndrome Day and the theme for this year is 'With Us, Not For Us'. This infographic aims to raise awareness on Down syndrome
World Down syndrome day is celebrated on the 21st day of the 3rd month coinciding with Trisomy 21.Trisomy 21 is a condition caused by the presence of an extra chromosome in the 21st pair. In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly declared the World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March to be observed each year. To raise awareness, people wear their most vibrant and striking, non-matching socks as mismatched socks resemble the patterns of chromosome 21. The theme for this year's campaign is 'With us, Not for us'. The aim is to not treat people with Down syndrome with sympathy or charity, but instead with acceptance, inclusivity and offer them same opportunities. Good healthcare, support from family, friends and society enable people with Down syndrome to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
