Nurtured by nature- The biophilic brain

The science behind how we are interconnected with nature

Biologist E O Wilson’s words, “Humans have an innate desire to connect with nature and other forms of life,” are not without scientific backing. Studies have shown that being around nature imparts a positive effect on humans’ physical and mental health. For example, nature helps to reduce stress, improve mood, and increase creativity. Some studies also indicate that simply viewing pictures of nature induces a soothing effect on the brain and alleviates anxiety and depression.

Studies have found that taking a walk through the forest reduces the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s “fight or flight” response to stress. This conserves the body’s energy inducing a ‘rest and digest’ mode via stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system.

This infographic captures some of these nuances.

1. Calming the brain- Nature stimulates alpha waves in the brain, inducing relaxation 2. Antidote for the blues- Plants and trees produce phytoncides, which give off a sweet and pleasant smell. This smell improves mood and reduces depression by boosting the levels of the feel-good hormone serotonin. 3.Finding serenity- Studies have shown that walks in nature decrease amygdala hyperactivity, preventing mental strain and potential illnesses 4.Switch-on 'rest and digest' mode-Forest bathing or spending time in nature can activate the parasympathetic nerves, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.
