Trembling truths: not all tremors are Parkinson’s

Tremors are the outcome of several other neurological and psychiatric conditions, many a time leading to a misdiagnosis of Parkinson's

Not all tremors are Parkinson’s,” says Dr Pramod Pal, professor at the Department of Neurology, National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bengaluru. Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition with physical manifestations of uncontrolled quivering, jerking, and muscle stiffness.

Dr Venkatraman Karthikeyan, neurologist at Gleneagles Global Hospital Chennai, concurs. In some cases, symptoms like tremors or stiffness might be mistaken as Parkinson’s, he says.

Dr Jaslovleen Sidhu, Parkinson’s and movement disorders specialist at Neuro Clinics, Punjab, emphasises that while tremors are a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease, they can also be due to other health conditions or factors, such as stress or anxiety.

Recalling a misdiagnosed case study, Dr Sidhu tells Happiest Health: “A woman in her late 50s came to us who had tremors for ten years. She was diagnosed and received treatment for Parkinson’s for three years. However, the treatment did not give her relief as she had another condition called dystonia and not Parkinson’s.”

Therefore, a comprehensive medical evaluation is necessary to determine the underlying cause of the tremors and rule out other potential conditions.

In this infographic, we put together some medical conditions that could show tremors similar to Parkinson’s disease.
