A low-FODMAP diet is prescribed to individuals who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) as a treatment. But what is it?
FODMAP is an abbreviation for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols.
These are short chain carbohydrates that are found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, cereals, and dairy products.
The low FODMAP diet was developed as a treatment option for those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
The diet first starts with an elimination phase, where foods that are high in FODMAP are taken out of the diet
These can include foods like apples, pears, cabbage, broccoli, wheat, and dairy products.
The second stage is the reintroduction phase, where certain foods are added in to see how well they are tolerated by the individual and to identify triggers.
A low FODMAP diet should only be followed under the strict guidance of a nutritionist as it is a highly restrictive diet.
