5 common urological conditions in children

Urological issues are becoming increasingly prevalent in children, raising concerns. Experts list some commonly observed issues and suggest ways to prevent them.

UTIs are very common in children, with their prevalence being three times higher among girls. Early intervention is crucial to prevent severe consequences, including kidney failure.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

This is a condition where one or both kidneys become swollen due to the buildup of urine. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever and painful urination.

Hydronephrosis

Commonly known as reflux, this congenital condition is characterized by the backward flow of urine from the bladder to the kidneys, resulting in infections. It is more prevalent in girls.

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR)

In this condition, the testes stay in the abdominal region instead of descending into the scrotum. Surgery is the recommended treatment, as delayed intervention can damage the sperm.

Cryptorchidism

This is observed in boys, where the urethral opening is present further down the penis, sometimes lower than the scrotum in severe cases. It can even lead to downward bending of the pelvis.

Hypospadias

Measures like proper hygiene, adequate hydration, a healthy diet, regular health checkups and open communication with parents can help prevent such issues in children.
