In time for R-Day: 55-year-old brigadier’s incredible feat

Brigadier NS Chaarag, along with a 13-member National Cadet Corps (NCC) contingent, completed a 3,600km cycle expedition from Kanyakumari to New Delhi on 23 January 2024.

The setback

In August 2020, a hit-and-run incident in Ranchi while cycling had left the brigadier with 18 factures in his body.

With ruptures in the small and large intestine and in the pelvis, he was airlifted to Lucknow for treatment.

Doctors told the cycling enthusiast that he would never be able to cycle again.

The challenge

Bedridden for four months (with 18 inches of screws in his pelvis), Brigadier Chaarag slowly started to walk using crutches.

Exercises and physiotherapy also helped him recover faster.

Mental strength

Self-confidence played a significant role in Brigadier Chaarag recovering and resuming cycling within just a year of his accident.

The brigadier is now a commander of the Baroda NCC Group Headquarters.
