Heavy rains in Chennai: How to protect yourself from infections

With heavy rains in Chennai, inducing a flood-like situation due to Cyclone Michaung, experts caution against the spread of waterborne infections.

Some common waterborne infections that can spread during floods or heavy rainfall include Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Leptospirosis and Cholera.

Doctors recommend some simple steps to protect yourself.

Avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary. If stepping out, wash your hands and feet after returning, wear protective gear like gloves and rubber boots.

Boil water before drinking. You can also add water purification chlorine tablets to water - 1 tablet per 500 to 600 ml quantity of water.

Avoid eating outside food and make sure your hands are clean before preparing and eating meals.

If you have an open wound, do not venture out. If stepping out is unavoidable, make sure your wounds are covered so they do not get wet and later infected.
