7 common heart problems elderly people should watch out for

Bradycardia

Bradycardia or low heart rate results from improper coordination between the heart muscle and the body’s electrical impulses, which affects the heart's pumping ability.

Atrial fibrillation

This condition is characterized by rhythmic irregularity in the heart's upper chambers, leading to heart failure and stroke. It can also cause reduced blood flow, resulting in loss of consciousness or a transient ischemic attack.

Transient ischemic attack (TIA)

TIA results from a temporary blockage of blood to the brain, causing symptoms similar to those of a stroke. It has the same mechanism as a heart attack.

Leaky heart valve

The heart valves degenerate with age and become narrow and leaky. Calcium deposition affects their normal functioning, making it difficult for them to open when the heart contracts.

Coronary artery disease (CAD)

CAD is caused by cholesterol buildup in the arteries, affecting blood supply to the heart. The symptoms can include chest pain, shortness of breath or a heart attack.

Broken heart syndrome

This is characterized by sudden weakening of the heart muscles due to acute stress or extreme emotions, usually experienced due to the loss of a partner. Depression can affect the heart too.

Heart failure

Aging causes stiffening of the heart muscles, due to which the heart can’t relax properly. This causes swelling in the body, leading to heart failure. All other heart conditions can also lead to heart failure.
