The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently cleared the first faecal microbiota product to prevent recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). The move is significant as it could open the door for a flurry of gut microbiome-linked treatments.

This new ‘drug’ is a faecal microbiota pill, which fixes one of the biggest issues associated with earlier treatments – the messiness. In today’s newsletter, we’ll tell you all about these poop pills and how they can revolutionise treatments for CDI and IBD, to even liver cirrhosis.

Then we move to future gut-linked treatments that could use modified gut bacteria that counter the ill effects of antibiotics on microbes in our guts, and engineered algae – because they can swim - to deliver drugs where they need to be inside the gut.

Finally, our growing understanding of the gut microbiome is also leading to advances in understanding how diet can play a role in keeping away disease. A recent study from Japan shows how using probiotics helped improve composite and visual memory of a study group of comprised of seniors showing early signs of Alzheimer’s.
