Rohan Bopanna, recipient of the Padma Sri award in 2024, and the reigning World No. 1 in men’s doubles tennis, has had a long and arduous journey in the professional tour. From a journeyman in the early 2000s to his first Grand Slam success in January 2024, at the grand old (in tennis terms) age of 44, Bopanna’s career is testament to his perseverance and hard work. In an exclusive interview with Happiest Health, Bopanna reveals the secrets to his longevity, his indulgences, including coffee, pancakes and waffles, and how Iyengar Yoga helped resurrect his career when knee issues threatened to put an end to it in 2019.
The journey has been long for Bopanna, with personal sacrifices aplenty, including time spent away from family. However, he revels in the success that has come at last, while cherishing the work put in — be it the strict regimen, meticulous diet, training, victories, injuries, setbacks, sacrifices, Iyengar yoga, and how he worked on the other nitty-gritties to evolve his game, all while not forgetting to have fun on the court.
