Fitness, for most, is a physical concept. However, for overall health and well-being, holistic fitness — which comprises physical, mental and emotional wellness — is what one should seek. While yoga and meditation are popular means to achieve the same, an array of other avenues exist as well, encompassing activities such as painting, writing, dancing, singing or any other means that allow free expression. Expressive arts therapy unlocks the way to holistic fitness through these pathways, say experts.
What is expressive arts therapy?
Expressive arts therapy explores the creative process of making art to enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of people of all ages, says Dr Anuradha Kabra, consultant clinical psychologist and art therapist, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore. “It employs various approaches, comprising visual arts such as painting, sculpting and drawing; movement disciplines like dancing and martial arts; music, including singing and music creation; as well as theatre and writing, which incorporates journaling, storytelling and poetry writing, among others,” she explains.
Healing through expressive arts
Sometimes, people struggle to articulate their feelings, thoughts, emotions, fears or insecurities to others or even to themselves, which is a crucial step to seeking help. This difficulty may stem from not knowing how to express these feelings, fear of discussing them or apprehension about being vulnerable.
“Art serves as an alternative language for them,” says Dr Kabra. “Through artistic expression, their subconscious and unconscious thoughts often seep into the artwork without them even realizing it. While creating art, some may become aware of these feelings, finding comfort in the indirect nature of their expression. This process can lead to catharsis and provide insights, marking the beginning of the healing journey in art therapy.”
Creativity and holistic fitness
Expressive arts use creativity as an effective tool for healing and self-expression. “Creativity helps people think outside the box,” says Preethi Rajagopalan, dance movement therapy practitioner, Creative Movement Therapy Association of India (CMTAI). “It offers novel ways to look at a particular scenario and find possible solutions, promoting holistic well-being.”
Furthermore, some people may be conditioned to think and act in a certain way. By enriching diverse perspectives, creativity promotes mental flexibility as well. “Mental flexibility is extremely crucial for holistic fitness. It makes you self-aware and helps you adapt to your perspectives, consider alternative viewpoints and better understand your thoughts, emotions and behaviors,” notes Dr Kabra.
Mindfulness and meditation in expressive arts
Mindfulness and meditation practices promote holistic fitness by allowing one to focus on the current moment, which increases awareness and reduces stress. Expressive arts encourage individuals to be present as well, offering benefits similar to mindfulness techniques. “When you are involved in activities like mandala creation, doodling, painting, sculpting, journaling, etc., it serves the purpose of meditation. While doing these activities, you focus on the present moment, embodying mindfulness,” explains Dr Kabra. “Doodling can also help in regulating emotions, which is crucial for holistic healing,” she adds.
