Fitness training has become readily accessible to everyone today, owing to significant technological advancements and a plethora of health and wellness platforms. In fact, people are spoiled for options. However, choosing the right fit becomes a deterrent for some, creating confusion and mental blocks in equal measure. For instance, the choice between opting for group classes or personal training is a dilemma many gym-goers face, with their decision potentially influenced by factors such as time constraints and cost. However, experts emphasize that one’s fitness goals should be the main focus when deciding between the two.

“Everyone has a different reason for attending fitness sessions, be it health concerns or weight loss. Based on their goals, they can easily establish if a group or personalized session is best for them,” says Amal C Bose, fitness trainer and assistant professor of physical education, Sree Sankara College, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. “For instance, group Zumba or aerobics classes are great for building cardiovascular endurance, coordination, etc. However, if you need to develop muscular or explosive strength, personalized sessions are ideal.”

Personal training for specific goals

Personalized training refers to a one-on-one session involving only the trainer and trainee. It allows for more attention to detail in one’s workout plan, where exercise regimens can be customized to their capabilities and goals.

“In this case, the trainer is well aware of the client’s goal,” says Tanuja Panda, a fitness instructor from Bangalore. “Being in a group setting can be challenging for someone who is overweight and has never been active, as they won’t be able to keep up with others.”

A personal trainer can design an exercise routine that suits an individual’s requirements and lifestyle, taking their health issues and limitations into account. This especially applies to overweight people who require a tailored schedule to facilitate weight loss.

Additionally, those who start working out to address certain health conditions require special attention because they may not be able to perform all types of exercises. “This could be overlooked in a group session, resulting in negative consequences,” says Panda.

Further, putting all such aspects aside, one can schedule individual sessions whenever it is convenient for them. Personal sessions are perfect for those who prefer to work out in their own space or have trouble finding time for group classes.

Group classes for social support

People pursuing general fitness goals and seeking motivation, social support and a sense of community will find group fitness sessions highly effective. “None of us are motivated every single day. At such times, we can always surround ourselves with driven, like-minded individuals who encourage one another to accomplish their fitness objectives. Even if you are too lazy to work out, watching others will inspire you to do so in a group class,” says Panda.

In addition, group sessions offer a variety of engaging and fun activities. One can try out dance fitness, yoga, circuit training, etc., on different days to break the monotony of the same routine and keep their spirits up.

Considering the cost factor

Personalized training is more costly than group classes. Those who can’t afford individual sessions can take certain measures to make the most of working out in a group setting. “Active participation, setting realistic goals, being consistent and welcoming a supportive atmosphere are essential to make full use of group exercise,” says Bose.

Additionally, choosing the right trainer is crucial for optimal outcomes in group sessions. “The trainer needs to be adaptable enough to work with diverse types of individuals. Given the varying levels of fitness among those in group workouts, the trainer must guide all the participants regarding the exercises they will perform and explain the dos and don’ts while performing specific exercises,” explains Panda.

Takeaways

  • One’s fitness goals should be the primary focus when deciding between personal training and group sessions.
  • In the case of personalized sessions, the trainer can tailor workout plans according to one’s abilities and objectives since they are fully aware of the client’s goal.
  • Group sessions are the best way to achieve general fitness goals while finding inspiration, camaraderie and social support.
