The incident that took place in Davanagere district in Karnataka raised concerns about the trending liquid nitrogen biscuits, smoky ice creams sold without any warning. Using liquid nitrogen in food and drinks has been quite the rage among children, for their ability to produce misty smoke-like vapors from the nose and mouth on being eaten. While the rumors earlier said that the boy had died post consumption of the liquid nitrogen biscuits, it was clarified by Davanagere police authorities that the boy has recovered. In November 2021, Raaj Kumar Bothra, a 67-year-old retired businessman from Bengaluru, was completely shattered and looking at a dark abyss as he was diagnosed with ampullary cancer. Ampullary cancer is cancer of the ampulla of Vater. The ampulla of Vater is located where the bile duct and pancreatic duct join into the small intestine. Ampullary cancer forms near many other parts of the digestive system. The cancer diagnosis left him with an emotional turmoil as just 19-months prior, his son, 38-year-old Rishab Bothra, had succumbed to cholangiocarcinoma or bile duct cancer in Edinburgh, Scotland. Despite the devastating loss of his son, Bothra braced himself for the journey ahead. He underwent Whipple surgery to remove the malignant tumor from the head of the pancreas, facing both physical and emotional challenges and was finally declared cancer-free in June 2022.
Testicular cancers are cancers arising from the testes. These are seen usually in younger males. Most young males may come with swelling on one side of the testes. It could be they would have had some injury and then after that they detected and they saw the swelling or it could be just a swelling which grows innocently. It may not be very painful also and when these cancers are evaluated, it is seen that it is a testicular cancer. Testicular cancers are of two types — seminomatous and non-seminomatous germ cell tumors. Most testicular cancers can be picked up sometimes with just blood tests. This is one of the type of cancers where even when it has spread to distant organs, even if it has spread to lungs, the cure rates with chemotherapy and surgery integrated treatment is very good.
When you’re out and about, quenching your thirst by drinking from a plastic bottle of packaged drinking water can seem commonplace. However, did you know that the seemingly clean and crystal-clear drinking water bottle holding a liter of water can have 110,000 to 370,000 plastic particles? Of this, 90% are nanoplastics, while the rest are microplastics, a new study has found. The study, conducted by researchers at the Columbia University Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University and Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in 2024. It analyzed samples from three popular brands of bottled water from the United States and revealed that on an average, one liter of bottled water contained 240,000 detectable plastic particles, of which 90% are nanoplastics. According to the researchers, this is 10 to 100 times greater than previous estimates.
