Mouth ulcers are small oval or round-shaped lesions that appear yellow, white, or red. They arise over the gums, palate, beneath the tongue, or in the inner portion of cheeks and lips. One may experience pain, discomfort, and a burning sensation in the mouth.
“Mouth ulcers commonly occur due to excessive stress and lack of sleep,” says Dr N Abitha, dentist from Erode, Tamil Nadu. Moreover, poor gut health due to regular consumption of spicy foods, stomach ulcers, and gastrointestinal disorders may lead to oral ulcers, she adds.
Oral ulcers can be an indication of nutritional deficiencies like vitamin B9, B12, zinc, or iron in the body. Oral ulcers heal on their own after two weeks, says Dr Abitha.
