Emotions can be likened to a rollercoaster ride, and on this journey, we encounter sadness and depression as two passengers. Â
Aditi Tulshyan, marriage and family counsellor and certified trauma therapist at XpressIt Mental Health Services, North Delhi, explains that depression is characterised by chronic low mood, change in appetite and weight, decreased interest in previously enjoyed activities, insomnia or hypersomnia, decreased concentration, thoughts of self-harm, reduced libido, sudden crying spells, and difficulty getting out of bed.Â
These symptoms may be triggered by chronic stress or the sudden loss of loved ones, persisting for at least two weeks, causing clinical distress and impairment in various aspects of life. Â
Sadness is a primary emotion experienced by everyone at some point due to stressful events, resulting in a low mood, lack of motivation, helplessness, disappointment, or sorrow. Unlike depression, sadness is not chronic.Â
Through this infographic, we will explore the differences between these emotional states, delving into the unique paths that set sadness and depression apart. Understanding these distinctions can lead to a brighter destination. Â
