Neurobics: pumping up the brain’s memory muscles

Just as physical exercises stimulate and strengthen our muscles, neurobic exercises provide a dynamic workout for the brain, enhancing its function and abilities

Introducing new and unfamiliar activities breaks the monotony of our daily routines and makes us mentally alert. So also, engaging in challenging tasks that stimulate different parts of the brain gives the brain a rigorous workout. In other words, neurobics or neuro-aerobics are exercises designed to maintain brain health. These activities promote improved neural connections and enhance cognitive abilities, learning, and memory.

What effect does neurobics have on the brain?

“Unlike physical exercises that primarily target the body’s muscles and cardiovascular system, neurobics prioritises cognitive stimulation and mental fitness,” says Dr Blen Tesfu Teklu, general physician at Bitena Primary Hospital, Ethiopia. Our brain consists of neural pathways that help us perform everyday tasks like brushing teeth, walking and dressing up, without conscious effort.

Neurobics deliberately disrupts our regular habits to break away from our old neural pathways. This disruption triggers the release of neurotrophin, a natural growth hormone that boosts brain fitness. Neurotrophin stimulates the development of new neural pathways, forming fresh connections in the brain. As a result, access to information within the brain becomes more efficient and intensified. “Regular engagement in neurobic exercises may contribute to better brain health and potentially reduce the risk of cognitive decline and age-related brain disorders,” adds Teklu.

The below infographic highlights some neurobics activities that can be incorporated into a daily routine to promote brain health:
