All devotees of skin self-care hope to get a flawless even skin tone. But age, exposure to different environmental stressors like pollution, and sun damage can make the skin dull and uneven. Experts give a lowdown on how to manage skin-related issues and get an even skin tone.
Dr Seema Oberoi Lall, consultant, Dermatology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, says that for even skin tone, it is important to maintain a skincare routine. It helps keep the skin healthy, clear, and fresh. “A simple and consistent routine can provide numerous benefits, such as preventing breakouts, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, improving skin texture and tone, and protecting the skin from environmental damage,” she adds.
Dr Lall suggests some ways to get an even skin tone:
Consistent sun protection: This is non-negotiable, according to experts. Sun exposure is a major contributor to uneven skin tone through hyperpigmentation, sunspots, and melasma. “Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen daily every three to four hours, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours’’ she adds. She advises people to seek shade and wear protective clothing for sun protection.
Use at least half a teaspoon of sunscreen on your face. Most sunscreens protect the skin for three to four hours, so be sure to reapply based on your sunscreen’s longevity. Consult your dermatologist to find the best suited option for you from among gels, creams and lotions, as well as physical and chemical sunscreen formulations.
Gentle exfoliation: Regular exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing for brighter, more even-toned skin. Choose gentle methods like chemical exfoliants with AHAs (glycolic acid) or BHAs (salicylic acid) for oily and acne-prone skin.
Targeted brightening serums: Look for serums containing ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, kojic acid, or arbutin. It works on hyperpigmentation and unevenness, promoting a brighter, more even complexion. Choose appropriate formulas based on your skin type and sensitivities.
Consider professional treatments: Treatments like laser peels, chemical peels, or microneedling can be effective for more stubborn hyperpigmentation. Consult a dermatologist to discuss the best option for your specific needs and concerns.
Healthy lifestyle habits: Diet, sleep, and stress all play a role in skin health. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and antioxidants, prioritise quality sleep, and manage stress effectively. These habits contribute to overall skin health and may help improve tone.
