What should my simple skincare routine include?

Your guide to a basic skincare routine for healthy skin

Maintaining a skincare regimen is like caring for a plant. Just as plants can wither if we do not take care of them, neglected your skin can lead to dullness, breakouts, and early ageing. This is why having a regular skincare regimen is essential for a glowing, healthy complexion.

A simple and consistent routine comes bearing many benefits including preventing breakouts, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, improving skin texture and tone, and protecting the skin from environmental damage.

“Regularly cleansing, moisturising, and protecting the skin helps maintain its natural balance, prevent moisture loss, and promote a radiant and glowing complexion,” says Dr Mohd Asif, a dermatologist and co-founder of Cara Clinic at Santacruz in Mumbai adding that people should choose products suitable for their skin type.

Dr Asif advises avoiding some common skincare mistakes, including over-exfoliating the skin, using harsh or drying products, neglecting sunscreen, not removing make-up before bed, and ignoring the importance of a consistent skincare routine.

  • Avoid scrubbing or rubbing it too harshly.
  • Listen to your skin and adjust your routine as needed.
  • If something is irritating you, stop using it.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat a healthy diet to support your skin’s health from the inside out.
  • Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation and damage the skin’s protective barrier.
  • Harsh products can strip the skin of its natural oils and cause dryness.
  • Neglecting a sunscreen can result in premature ageing and increase the risk of skin cancer.
  • Not removing makeup before bed can clog pores and lead to breakouts.

Consult a dermatologist if you have any concerns about your skin or if unsure about the products to use.
