As you go about having a meal, it is your tongue that gets the first taste of the food, orchestrating a symphony of flavours that allow you to relish the dish. You see, the journey of digestion starts with the simple act of swallowing. However, it is the tongue that truly enhances your experience of having food. A clean tongue not only improves taste but also plays a crucial role in sustaining gut health. Regular tongue cleaning is not just about the tastebuds; it helps you maintain your oral health.
Dr Deepa Natarajan, periodontist from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, gives the following tips to effectively maintain tongue hygiene.

Right way to clean your tongue
Tongue cleaners come in different materials – wooden, copper, plastic, stainless steel. You can opt for any material based on your preference and comfort. “Some people may get a gagging reflex while removing the debris from the tongue. To avoid this, scrape your tongue from the centre to the tip instead of starting it from the back,” says Dr Natarajan. You can look at the mirror to control the movement of the scraper and ease the removal of debris. She adds that it is important to wash the tongue scraper after use and wipe it with a clean cloth to prevent bacterial contamination.
Benefits of tongue cleaners
Dr Natarajan emphasises the following benefits of tongue cleaning.
- Tongue cleaning aids in the removal of toxins produced by bacteria and improves the appearance of tongue.
- Regular use of tongue cleaners after brushing gradually reduces the white coating on the tongue and gives freshness in the mouth.
- It maintains the flow and quality of saliva thereby enhancing the taste sensations.
- Rinsing the mouth after every meal not only helps in maintaining tongue hygiene but also prevents tooth decay.
Taking care of your tongue is a small step that can make a noticeable difference in your oral health. So, add this to your daily routine and keep your tastebuds dancing.
