A flow state, also known as being “in the zone,” refers to a state of intense focus and engagement in an activity or task. It is a peak performance state where we feel fully engaged, energised and deeply involved in the task at hand.
And the activity could be creative such as music and dance, a sport, or related to academics, one’s job or a skill.
The flow state is considered an optimal state of consciousness where people feel their best and perform at their peak levels. It is often experienced by athletes, performers, artists and even professionals who are fully engrossed in their work. They are good at it and enjoy doing it.
Achieving a flow state leads to heightened focus, creativity, productivity and overall well-being.
According to a 2022 research published in the Frontiers in Psychology journal, the benefits of flow include peak levels of performance and productivity. The intense focus, lack of distractions and sense of control help in completing tasks optimally. Additionally, learning in a flow state becomes an invigorating experience and individuals pick up new skills relatively quickly.
It begins with clear goals
Bengaluru-based psychologist Sonia Prasadam says the key to cultivating the experience of flow lies in setting achievable goals for a task.
“First, one should know that there is a chance of completing the task. One needs to be able to concentrate, and have clear goals and immediate feedback. Additionally, there must be a deep involvement, away from any worries or stressors of the world, and a sense of control over actions,” she explains.
Here are the five key characteristics of flow according to Prasadam:
