Come summer, as cold wintry days fade out for their next season, the body starts to revitalise itself under bright sun.
The mood in warm weather feels light. Some find that their muscle strength has improved. For some, it could mean weight loss and for some others, relief from arthritic symptoms.
Summer perks have a price – this is the time one should exercise caution against the risk of dehydration, skin infections, gastrointestinal problems and seasonal allergies which spike at this time.
“For this, we need to adjust our dietary choices, habits and routines to align with the demands of the season. By doing so, we can maintain balance and enjoy the summer heat while supporting our overall well-being,” says Dr Vishnu Priya A V, senior health adviser, Vieroots Wellness Solutions, Kochi.
Sweetness in summer
Dr Swapna Madhavan, an ayurveda expert from Bengaluru, says sweet, bitter and astringent tastes are recommended in summer. Madhura rasa or sweet taste acts as a graahi which means it will make the body demand water naturally which helps in avoiding dehydration in summer. Try to eat water-rich pulpy fruits, vegetables such as watermelon, berries, mangoes, oranges, cucumber and leafy greens.
Summer-super coolants
Keeping yourself well hydrated is essential. However, avoid consuming 4-5 litres of water simply because it is summer. Instead, aim for adequate hydration by drinking water or a healthy and cool beverage when you are thirsty. Do not drink ice-cold water as it may disrupt digestion.
Practical alternatives include a coolant or juice made from any of these: kokum (garcinia indica), raw mango, palm fruit (ice apple), fresh lemon, cucumber, mint or lemon grass.
Digestive health needs extra care against infections. Avoid oily, fried and spicy foods. Complaints of hyperacidity and piles-related problems tend to aggravate during summer.
Summer health tips
Dr Vishnu Priya shares a few summer health tips for staying healthy during summer. “Choose lighter, easily digestible meals to support digestion and opt for grains like barley and basmati [a lighter variety.] Use coconut oil for body massage, wear breathable fabrics, and engage yourself in mild exercises like swimming and yoga. Use essential oils such as sandalwood and jasmine that have a cooling effect to stay refreshed,” she suggests.
Also, try to do mild to moderate physical activities during summer but listen to your body’s needs for comfort. Do not completely avoid exercise but ensure that your body gets the rest it needs to enhance its productivity.
