Anxiety is no stranger to many of us: be it over a past event, an upcoming job interview, new job responsibilities, public speaking or performance reviews – any of these can churn the calmest of minds.

Last year Anmol Kaur, 30, a fashion designer from Ludhiana, contracted COVID-19. While she has recovered, she continues to suspect that she caught the virus when she was at a local grocery store. Even now the thought of visiting that store gives her the jitters. “If I go to that grocery shop again, I am sure I will get infected once more,” she insists.

Vandana S, counsellor and psychologist at mental health startup Psychoflakes in Bengaluru, says anxiety can take us either into the past or into the future. Our thinking is affected when fearful or traumatic memories haunt us, and we lose track of the present.
