We may have seen how the veins on some people’s legs conspicuously stand out. They have a condition called varicose veins.
Our school textbooks tell us that veins carry deoxygenated blood from our body towards the heart. The veins in our legs, however, put in extra effort to pump blood up because gravity can make blood flow back downwards. Thankfully, we have valves in our veins that are like one-way gates. They close when blood tries to go backward. This ensures that the blood moves in the right direction.
Malfunctioning valves
For some people, these valves do not function properly. As a result, the blood flows backwards causing it to pool in one place. The veins in the calves and thigh areas become enlarged and appear twisted and coiled. This appearance is the reason for the name varicose veins, which comes from the Latin word varix, meaning twisted.
Symptoms of varicose veins
The symptoms and their severity differ from person to person. The increased pressure in the veins can lead to symptoms like leg heaviness and leg fatigue. Those with the condition can also experience itching, cramps, tenderness, exercise intolerance, and skin discolouration. In rare cases, it can also lead to ulcers. However, experts say that most people with varicose veins do not experience symptoms at all.
Dr Vismita Kapila, consultant at Dr Vismita’s Homeopathy, Mumbai, says that increased pressure on the veins during pregnancy can also contribute to varicose veins. A 2022 study indicates that multiple childbirths, excess weight gain during pregnancy and post-term birth may influence the development of varicose veins.
In most cases, the symptoms subside after childbirth, she adds.

Homeopathy for varicose veins
While modern medicine experts say that most cases are managed by wearing compression stockings to help alleviate symptoms like pain and aching, there are some holistic ways to manage the condition too.
Homeopaths say that early management can help prevent complications like ulcers due to poor blood circulation.
Homeopaths choose suitable medication based on various physical and mental health aspects of an individual, says Dr Kapila. This includes lifestyle, symptoms, habits and even their mental state. As stress can also affect the management process, counselling is also given along with medication.
Naturopathic approach
Naturopaths recommend yoga poses to manage the condition. Dr Amarnath BR, naturopathic physician from Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, says, “Elevating the legs can improve blood flow and prevent swelling. Thus, certain inverted yoga poses can help.”
He recommends yoga poses like sarvangasana (shoulder stand), viparita karani (leg up the wall pose) and sirsasana (headstand), which can bring relief. Dr Amarnath also suggests avoiding prolonged standing or sitting, which can exert pressure on the veins.
He adds that one can undergo massage therapies to improve circulation. “Centripetal friction massage is useful in varicose veins, which helps move the blood towards the heart,” says Dr Amarnath. He cautions though that this massage is only advised after thoroughly evaluating a person’s condition.
Holistic practitioners also advise cold packs or ice packs that can help bring the swelling down and reduce the discomfort. If that is not suitable, a cold leg bath is recommended. Exercise and weight management help better manage the condition and prevent further progression. “Go for small walks,” is Dr Kapila’s advice. A leg elevation pillow is also beneficial to improve circulation and alleviate symptoms, she adds.
