Completing graduation is undoubtedly a significant milestone in one’s life. However, some young adults may experience a challenging phase known as post-graduation depression, post-graduation blues, or a slump. Although these terms are not clinical diagnoses, they aptly describe the feelings that many recent graduates encounter. The transition from college to the workforce can bring about anxiety, uncertainty, and a multitude of changes. Suddenly, there are bills to pay, the responsibilities of adult life, and the reduced ability to socialise as extensively as before. Â
These factors can leave recently graduated individuals feeling overwhelmed and trapped in a state of emotional slump.Â
Post-graduation depression can manifest uniquely, affecting individuals in diverse ways:Â
- Loss of purpose due to the absence of a structured environment of college and clear goalsÂ
- Lack of motivation due to the transition to the workforce and the demands of adult responsibilitiesÂ
- Uncertainty about career prospects and the pressure to make important and right life decisions.Â
- Leaving behind a close-knit community of friends, classmates, and a built-in social networkÂ
- Financial pressures like student loan debt, the need to find employment, and the pressure to achieve financial independenceÂ
- Feelings of inadequacy by comparing oneself to peers and questioning one’s own accomplishments, abilities, and sense of self-worthÂ
- Change in sleep cycle due to a change in overall scheduleÂ
It is natural to experience setbacks after graduation and remember that many young adults face challenges such as being unprepared to deal with taxes, auditing, budgeting, and adjusting to work-life balance. Additionally, one may struggle to unlearn age-old habits and implement better ones. While these difficulties can be overwhelming, with the right mindset and by taking things one step at a time, it is possible to overcome post-graduation depression.Â
