Chris Gardner faced multiple challenges in his life. The odds were truly stacked against him. A failed marriage, rent overdue for months, not a single source of income, father to a five-year-old son. And yet, as portrayed in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith’s character remains positive despite it all. And it is this very positivity that sees him through all the highs and lows. Chris embarks on a goal: to be a stock broker. Without two coins to rub together, he dares to dream it. Even better, he dares to do it. And he starts out right from the bottom: as an intern.

Life can be unpredictable and stressful at times, but that is when optimism is all the more important. A positive attitude is all about developing a mindset that not only adapts to challenging circumstances but also finds positive things in them. We might not ‘feel happy’, per se, but we can still have a positive perspective on things.

Here are expert-approved five ways to stay positive.

Practise gratitude

Cultivating gratitude can be a helpful tool for fostering a positive mindset. Arohi Singh, a counselling psychologist from Chandigarh advises taking a moment to reflect on the simple pleasures and blessings of life—be it the warmth of sunlight on your face or the aroma of your morning coffee. As you consistently focus on what you are thankful for, you will find that even on challenging days, there is something that keeps you going.

Here are a few ways to stay positive by cultivating gratitude in your day-to-day life

  • Keeping a gratitude journal can be a helpful habit. Write down three things you are thankful for each day. This practice can shift your focus towards the positive aspects of your life.
  • When faced with challenges, try to find something positive or a lesson you can be grateful for in the situation. This can help shift your perspective.

Mindfulness meditation

Finding moments of stillness can be a game-changer for your mental well-being. Sit in a quiet space, allowing your thoughts to come and go without judgment. This is the essence of mindfulness meditation. “By incorporating this practice into your daily routine, you create a mental sanctuary where stress and negativity can dissipate,” says Singh. When you develop mindfulness, you will find a heightened sense of clarity and a greater capacity for openness in life.

  • Try to be fully present in the moment without judgment. It can help reduce stress and anxiety, allowing for a more positive outlook.
  • Start with short sessions and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable. Apps and guided meditations can be useful for beginners.

Surround yourself with positivity

Consider the effect of your social circle on your overall outlook. Envision spending time with individuals who uplift and inspire you. Positive energy is infectious, says Singh, and by surrounding yourself with optimistic people, you create a supportive environment that nurtures your own positivity. “This extends beyond personal connections; take a look at your physical surroundings.” A clutter-free, organised space can do wonders for your mental clarity.

Here are a few tips to surround yourself with positivity in your day-to-day life

  • Take stock of your current social connections. Identify individuals who consistently bring positivity into your life and uplift your spirits. Conversely, consider distancing yourself from those who may have a consistently negative effect.
  • Remove unnecessary items, organise your belongings, and create a space that feels comfortable and welcoming.

Engage in physical activity

According to Singh, physical activity releases endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevators, leaving you with a sense of accomplishment and well-being. Exercise daily, whether you choose a brisk walk in nature, a dance class, or a home workout routine. “As you make movement a regular part of your routine, you will start noticing that not only does your body become healthier, but your mind too becomes a hub for positive energy, ready to face whatever challenges may come your way,” Singh says.

Here are a few ways to stay positive by engaging in physical activity in your day-to-day life

  • Find an activity you enjoy, whether it is walking, swimming, yoga, or dancing.
  • Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

Set realistic goals

Imagine a life where goals are not overwhelming tasks but manageable steps leading to success. “By setting realistic goals, you create a roadmap that brings purpose and direction to your life,” says Singh. When you do this, you will find that the pursuit of your goals becomes not just a source of achievement but a continuous source of personal growth.

Here are a few tips to set realistic goals in your day-to-day life

  • Break down larger goals into smaller, achievable tasks.
  • Celebrate small victories along the way, and do not be too hard on yourself if things do not go as planned.
